The Waukee Brief
A night out in Waukee tends to run the same shape: a drink somewhere with a patio, dinner, a stop for something sweet, and one last thing to make it count. Waukee spreads its spots out more than an old downtown does, so most nights involve a short hop between them. Here's the full board, laid out by the part of the night, so you can build your own. Or steal one of the four ready-made plans at the bottom.
Pick one stop from each stage and you've got a night. The University Avenue corner and Old Town carry the in-town options; when you want a full entertainment district, West Des Moines and Jordan Creek are about ten minutes east. Short on time or ideas? Skip straight to the ready-made plans.
The full taproom and bar rundown is in our breweries & bars guide.
More, sorted by cuisine, in our best restaurants in Waukee guide, or let the dinner picker choose.
The whole sweet-tooth list is in our ice cream & dessert guide.
The rest is in things to do in Waukee.
A patio beer at Barn Town Brewing, dinner at Rube's Steakhouse where you grill your own steak, a homemade scoop at Home Sweet Cone, then a sunset walk at Triumph Park.
Oysters and a cocktail at Guesthouse Tavern + Oyster, a wood-fired dinner at Firebirds, a scoop from Waukee Ice Cream Shoppe, and a late movie at Jordan Creek.
Rube's Steakhouse for the grill-your-own experience, a scoop at Home Sweet Cone, then games at Smash Park in West Des Moines to see who wins at axe throwing.
Burgers and local beer at Central Standard, duckpin bowling at Smash Park, and a last round at Gastro Grub & Pub on the way home.

Waukee spreads its spots out rather than packing them into one district. The closest thing to a walkable cluster is the University Avenue corner, where Barn Town Brewing and Guesthouse Tavern + Oyster sit side by side. Old Town holds Littleleaf Luncheonette and Waukee Ice Cream Shoppe, and for a bigger entertainment district you drive about ten minutes east to West Des Moines and Jordan Creek.
For an easy win, book Rube's Steakhouse & Lounge, where guests grill their own Iowa steak over an open hearth and the cooking becomes part of the night. Follow it with a homemade scoop at Home Sweet Cone or Waukee Ice Cream Shoppe, then games at Smash Park in West Des Moines, about ten minutes east.
Barn Town Brewing pours its own beer alongside a from-scratch pub menu, Central Standard Craft Burgers & Beer does burgers and a local-beer list, and Guesthouse Tavern + Oyster serves Northwoods plates and a raw bar. All three let you eat and drink without changing venues.
In town, an evening walk at Triumph Park, disc golf, or a stroll on the Raccoon River Valley Trail fills the after-dinner hours. For indoor entertainment, Smash Park in West Des Moines has pickleball, duckpin bowling, axe throwing, and an arcade, and the Jordan Creek area adds a movie theater, all about ten minutes east.
A memorable Waukee date night is dinner at Rube's Steakhouse & Lounge, where you grill your own steak, or a patio pint at Barn Town Brewing followed by a scoop at Home Sweet Cone. For a dressier night, Firebirds Wood Fired Grill or the raw bar at Guesthouse Tavern + Oyster both work, with a movie at Jordan Creek to finish.
